Apple introduced Lightning connector in 2012, as a replacement for the 30-pin dock connector. Since then, these connectors are used for all the iPhones, iPods and iPads. All Lightning cables and accessories have a tiny authentication chip placed inside. This chip communicates with the device and indicates if it is an Apple-approved cable or accessory.
Apple recommends cables that have "Made for Apple" badge. An “MFi Certification Program” is offered by the Apple to all the third party manufacturers. This program ensures that all the accessories have a superior built quality and are compatible with Apple hardware.
